Chapter Eight

That night, Jimmy drove around his patrol zone, his hands tight on the unit’s wheel, angry excitement sizzling through him with every beat of his heart.

He stopped at a stop sign, pulled out his phone and searched his contacts for the next guy on his list.

“Hey, Clay,” he said.

His friend answered in a sleep-drugged whine. “Jimmy, for fuck’s sake, I have to go to work in the morning!”

“This is more important.”

“Yeah, well, unlike you, I have a wife and kid.”

“And if you don’t want them to be tiger chow, maybe you’d better goddamn pay attention.”

“The fuck are you talking about?”

“Did you see the video? That bitch almost ate everybody in the restaurant! She’s dangerous! We’ve got to do something about her before it’s too late.”

“Jesus, Jimmy, you always said she didn’t even have a tiger. Said it was probably one of those toy poodles…”

“Well, she’s got a tiger. I don’t know who she blew to get it, but she’s got a tiger. And we need to do something about her. Her, and that mother of hers. One of these days that bitch Jocelyn is going to poison everybody in town.” He snorted. “The Arcane Corps? Ha! Should call it the Satan Corps. That’s how they get those cats to begin with. Probably sacrifice babies or something.”

“Jimmy, you are so full of shit.” He hung up.

Jimmy shrugged and sent Clay’s contact to his new friend. She’d make the guy see reason. She’d get everybody just where they needed to be.

She was real good at that.

Anastasia walked into the Morning Scramble at five a.m. The Scramble was the kind of greasy spoon that mainly catered to truckers, and the waitstaff looked a little confused at the number of people packing it at this hour.

Anastasia could be very persuasive when she wanted to be.

This would be just the first little meeting she’d hold today. By the time she got done talking, the owner would lose that confused and wary look. He’d be all in.

Anastasia stood up from the tables Jimmy’s friends had pushed together. As the crowd watched her with skeptical eyes, she drew in a breath.

And began to sing, “God Bless America.”

That was a nice touch if she did say so herself. By the time the last piercing note had faded, she owned everyone in the restaurant.

It was nine o’clock in the morning when it started. Margay, Nancy, and the rest of the Spoon crew were busy cleaning up the mess from the day before, Grant having released the scene back to them.

They’d cleared all the tables and gone to work cleaning the prep areas. Now, while the crew swept, mopped, and hauled off trash, Margay got everything ready for the Hobart dishwasher.

In the distance, she heard a shout, followed by the rumble of loud, angry voices.

What the hell is that? Calling on Razia’s keen hearing, she concentrated.

From the sound of it, a bunch of people were congregating outside the restaurant. And they weren’t happy about something.
